Unit 3 Outcome 2: Design Analysis

Introduction

Assessment overview

This project will require you to locate two differing examples for each of the five tasks. You are seeking to find examples which relate to your area of interest, but also allow for meaningful discussion about the topic you are focssing on. This project will culminate in the completion of a written report comparing and contrasting five sets of design examples, analysing and evaluating the design decisions made for each.

1. Purpose, Context and Audience

TASK

You are to select two designs and describe the designs purpose, context and audience, analysing and evaluating the design decisions made in response to these considerations.

DETAILS

The report needs to be 300 words and address each of the considerations

Framework

BACKGROUND

Every design produces has a purpose (the reason that the design exists) a context (the time and place of the design) and an Audience (The end users, or people affected by the design) - it is important to understand these three items efore embarking on the design development.

WHAT YOU WILL BE MARKED ON

2. PMI Evaluation

TASK

You are to produce a PMI Evaluation for two design examples, looking at the Plus (positive), Minus (Negative) and Interesting aspects of each design.

DETAILS

This document is to total approximately 300 words (~50 words per field, per design), and must be displayed in the form of a PMI Table

Framework

BACKGROUND

PMI Analaysis are a common and effective method of evaluating and analysing design examples, the 'plus' provides insights into features or ideas that you may wish to carry into future designs, the 'minus' can often underline opportunities for improvement, or areas of weakness in a design, the 'interesting' component is a great way to step back and objectively reflect on the broader implications of the design.

3. Elements and Principles

TASK

Select two different design examples of interest to you, and describe and evaluate the design decisions made by the designer around the Design Elements and Principles.

DETAILS

This document is to be 300 words, detailing the Design Elements and Principles used for both design examples, describing in detail what sort of decisions were made and how they affected the aesthetic function of the design.

Framework

BACKGROUND

The Design Elements and Principles are an excellent framework for analysing design and describing parts of a design in detail.

4. Methods, Media, Materials

TASK

You are to locate two design examples from a design field that interests you, each design example must utilise a different Method, Media and Material - you are to describe those Methods, Materials and Media, then provide an evaluation as to how they have influenced the overall design.

DETAILS

The document is to be 300 words and include how methods, media and materials contribute to the aesthetic function of a design

Framework

BACKGROUND

The choice of Methods, Media and Materials can greatly effect the aesthetics and function of a design, it is important to understand how different Methods, Materials and Media can influence a design, to ensure that you are able to make appropriate decisions in your own work.

5. Design Factors

TASK

You are to locate two design examples from a design field that interests you, then analyse and evaluate how factors, including economic, technological, social, cultural and environmental, may have influenced that design.

DETAILS

The written report needs to be 300 words, and include at least three factors.

Framework

BACKGROUND

It is important to understand how various external factors can influence and guide design decisions. These factors are often underpinned by the purpose, audience and context of the design.
